Speech therapy for kids.

From speech disorders and stuttering to poor articulation, expressive language delays, and feeding issues, the SpeakAbility team is ready to help you and your family face any speech-language challenge head-on and pave the way to your child’s fullest potential.

How it works.

Once a referral is made, each child is assigned to a therapist who can best meet their needs. The therapist then works with the child and their family to develop an effective treatment plan that includes therapy and home practice exercises. We deliver our services in homes, schools, daycare facilities, via teletherapy, or at our office in Mooresville, NC.

We are happy to schedule an initial screening or a comprehensive evaluation and can get a referral from your physician if necessary.

Speech & Language Disorders

Growing up, children learn the language(s) of their parents, family, and surrounding environment. Though it takes time, children reach a series of speech-language milestones from birth through the first five years of life.

However, many children struggle with forming or understanding certain sounds and words in speech and can subsequently fall behind in their speech-language development.

A child with a speech sound disorder will have difficulty producing certain sounds or groups of sounds. This may cause a lack of speech intelligibility at the word or sentence level.
Other speech disorders include childhood apraxia of speech and fluency disorder or stuttering. Speech and language disorders may also be associated with cerebral palsy, cleft palate and Down Syndrome.

A child with a language disorder will have difficulty understanding language, communicating, or expressing themselves. Someone with a language disorder may not have trouble forming sounds and words. Still, they will struggle to use and understand spoken language properly ‒ but both speech and language disorders can occur simultaneously in some children.

After evaluating your child, our team will personalize a treatment plan that addresses their unique speech and/or language needs. If you would like more information or would like to schedule an evaluation or a speech-language screening or evaluation for your child, contact us today.

Feeding & Swallowing Disorders

Dysphagia (feeding and swallowing difficulty) can result from improper use of the mouth, lips, tongue, or throat while feeding and swallowing. Feeding and swallowing disorders can create a range of problems and symptoms in children, including:

  • Long feeding times
  • Limited food intake & subsequent malnutrition/dehydration
  • Congestion during mealtimes
  • Breathing abnormalities
  • Visible discomfort
  • Choking or gagging
  • Vomiting or spitting up
  • Gurgly sounds
  • Aspiration or upper respiratory infections

Children with feeding/swallowing disorders can also struggle to consume certain textured foods.

As Speech-Language Pathologists, the SpeakAbility team focuses on developing and strengthening a child’s oral muscles and tongue movements. Depending on your child’s needs, we can help them learn to chew foods and swallow liquids properly. We’ll guide them on their breathing and behavior during mealtimes. We can also help children who struggle with certain textured foods or have sensory issues that make it uncomfortable to pick up or put food in their mouths.

Oral-Motor Disorders

An oral-motor disorder makes it difficult for a child to move and control the lips, tongue, and jaw muscles when they eat or speak. Oral-motor disorders occur when there’s poor coordination between the brain and muscles, often as the result of neurological issues, congenital disabilities, degenerative diseases, or injuries.

Dysarthria and apraxia are the most common. Dysarthria is characterized by slow, slurred speech due to weak facial muscles and poor coordination and control. Childhood apraxia of speech is characterized by the inability for the speech muscles to move properly during speech ‒ not as the result of muscle weakness but defects in neurological pathways between the brain and facial muscles.

Children with oral-motor disorders are hard to understand when they speak. They omit certain sounds, struggle to imitate words or pronounce longer words, and can even slur their words or drool while talking.

We provide dynamic oral-motor therapy to help children strengthen their facial muscles and improve coordination between the lips, jaw, and tongue. Based on the type and extent of your child’s oral-motor disorder, our team will tailor a treatment plan that utilizes play-based techniques. Contact us to learn more!

Accent Reduction

SpeakAbility, Inc. provides accent reduction services to help those who have a strong foreign or regional accent. Accent reduction does not make an accent disappear; rather, it makes a person sound more intelligible to others.
